Rental with major water intrusion

Good evening BP,

I currently live in a rental property. It is a single family home with a basement that I have been living in for 1 year now. Over the past year I have experienced significant water intrusion on the basement that has left water damage and has made the basement useless. The floors are completely cracked, water has eroded paint on the walls, dirt is all over the floor, and their are two dehumidifiers that are running constantly and are emptied at least once a day. I have repeatedly sent complaints with pictures and videos to the property managers and all they have done is send a maintenance worker 3 times that all have said major work needs to be done and it is beyond anything they can fix. My lease is through October 2024 but I really don’t want to live in this mess anymore. The whole point of having a basement was so I could store my stuff and let the dogs have their own space.

I wanted to see what options I may have before I call a lawyer. The township has already as well and even they reached out to the property manager and the owner’s group. I own a couple properties so this is a learning experience for me not that I would let the issue go this far in the first place but I can still learn from it.

Any help is gladly appreciated!

@Lucien Perreault I think you would be in the clear simply giving notice and moving out at this point. Landlord is responsible for quiet enjoyment. I do not believe you are getting that. You should find a local tenant's union to help you out. They will have free lawyers to review and advise. You can always get an attorney and pay them later if you so choose. All the best!
