How to tell a prosective tenant they were not selected?

Question

Hi,

We are in a situation where we have multiple qualified applicants wanting to rent our house. What's the best way to tell them we didn't select them? Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks, Sandhya

John Underwood · Answer

@Sandhya Gorman Just be straight to the point. Tell the others that you are sorry to tell them that you have selected another applicant. Don't elaborate beyond that. Wish them luck in locating another place.

Russ M. · Answer

If you are not selecting them because of credit reasons you must formally notify them in writing of the reason and also the credit reporting agency that you used. If you use SmartMove they have sample templates for you to use.

As the other posts said, I would keep it simple and straight to the point. I personally would recommend notifying them through email.

When do you need to send a letter vs letting them know verbally?

Walt Dockery · Answer

Simply saying you have selected another applicant and the property is no longer available is almost always the easiest reason IMO.
