I have done everything from swapping out a fixture to completely wiring a new room to replacing a service panel. Electrical work is not rocket surgery. Use common sense, follow BKM's (best known methods) and use quality components and things can go well.
I agree with @Michael Kugler that it is easy to make a mistake and cause some real damage, so if you aren't confident, just hire it out. As an engineer, electricity doesn't scare me in the slightest. I am not a moron and I never use the "here hold my beer" mantra on anything. :)
