Asbestos Testing and Scraping Popcorn Versus Skimming Over

Hey All! I am currently in the middle of my first full remodel and I have a couple questions. The first is, my home was built in 1971. Therefore, I know there is a possibility that it has asbestos in the popcorn and drywall. I was curious what the pros and cons are to testing for it? I cannot think of any cons, but I was curious if there are any. In addition, does anyone have recommendations for asbestos testing in Mesa, AZ or the Phoenix Metro area?

My follow up question is, should I scrape the popcorn or just skim coat over it? Thanks for any advice you can provide!

@Taylor D. Jenkins I would always be honest about what I know.  If you know it was there and then abated, just say that.  Asbestos is in more places than most people know and a lot of people are just afraid of the word.  In many situations, if left undisturbed, Asbestos Containing Materials are not a problem and EPA considers it to be safe.
