Data, tools, and API's for Property Data

Hi everyone,

I am wondering where you go for your data. I'm looking into multi-family units in Pittsburgh and I've been working with the Zillow API using the ZillowR package but keep running into a 501 error (Protected data is unavailable through API) with the `GetUpdatedPropertyDetails` function which returns critical info like price, number of bedrooms, number of units, etc. I would like to build a tool that will find properties that fit my criteria in a given region, then return some of the profitability metrics, sensitivity analysis, and so forth to help me quickly find suitable investment opportunities and return that into a nice report. If the data is available through the Zillow API, it's rather straightforward, but - in Pittsburgh at least - a lot of these properties have data protected.

As long as API's are available, I'd like to avoid a scraping solution like this one, but maybe will have to go down that path and simply be careful about my requests. Also, I've looked into the Quandl API but have found the documentation to be terribly out of date making it very difficult to use in an automated fashion.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

@Jason L. @Nettles Mason @Tony Zuanich @Carl Scott@Ramy Man @Christian Hubbs

Idiots on billboards still get super rich in this industry. And until that is solved, I will be using my extremely limited powers to battle that human behavior. There is too much corruption and a hefty monopoly behind the scenes that's gotta go.

I have been working on something for quite some time now. It's a fairly large project that will require significant time investment. However, I think the disruption potential is decently substantial.

I never realized people interested in the real estate would understand tech. I had thought they were mutually exclusive, but here we are.

By the looks of it, most of you are far smarter than me. But +1 for combining forces. I am a realtor. I also am a full stack developer. And I have an idea.

Anyone interested?

I have a basic app half-built in PHP on Symfony using the Zillow API, but again  - the 501 error comes up a lot. Once I get the rest of the math working I'll look into other API data sources. I also am probably going to move the whole project to Vue and Typescript - it's getting messy in vanilla JS. I'm a web developer/application engineer.

I started a new thread on a beta project in Tarrant County TX  Im working on and would like some feedback.  It is county specific and collects all data in the county.  All owners are linked to their properties no matter what county they are in.

I realize it is a different approach but county data seems to be the best source of data I could find. ex. grab everything and and filter.

My focus is on homeowners but all commercial and multifamily properties are collected also.

I have 4 counties built and they are all linked together.

It doesn't appear this is gaining traction, but I'm at least piping up just in case.

There are already services doing stuff like what's been discussed here. I, too, have considered building my own, but (1) I want to start/grow my RE business, (2) the cost of these services isn't prohibitive.

That said, if anyone wants to seriously pursue this, I'd be willing to discuss the opportunity. I've been developing business solutions since high school (I graduated in 1980), and I've been developing secure, scalable business solutions on the web since, well, since people started developing business solutions on the web. I'm still gainfully/successfully employed doing this having been at it literally for decades. Quite frankly, I love doing this stuff!

Is there any traction to this thread? Looks like it died on the vine but very interested to see if there was any progress.
