No cost real estate meetups

Before getting involved in real estate I worked in Information Technology where meetups are usually 100% free to attend. 

most real estate gatherings come with a sticker price. I am thinking about bringing an open source approach and organizing meetups at no cost. Any reason why this would be a bad idea?
