@Todd Crippen

Thank you for sharing. I am looking for constant long term return, not too much interested in equity gain although it would be nice to have...

@Tom Makinen

Thank you very much for your constructive advice!

@Ali Boone

My overall impression was that I could find the deal myself in zillow or trulia better than what they were selling. The locations, house conditions were not attractive at all.. but this is just my impression about turnkey.

@Geordy Rostad

Thank you for the info

Hi BP,

I've had passion on real estate investment after reading rich dad. I am a physician having really busy schedules with quite decent income. What I am realizing is that REI is not really passive. I even looked at turnkey companies but I couldn't find great "products" for a decent return.

I am enjoying my job and my goal is not early retirement but want my money and myself to “work for me”.

Do you think I am having good excuses not to start REI in this situation? If not (I hope you say not), what would you do first in my case? My biggest concern is I may end up doing very poor in both my job and REI...

I am a complete newbie in this world and am trying to bid for hiring contractors. I need to build an attached garage, roof repair/replacement, open up kitchen, and make two mudrooms. I also plan to extend enclosed porch or sunroom in the backyard, and want to connect garage and this enclosed porch if possible.

In this case, should I hire a general contractor or individual contractor for roof, garage, porch, etc? If I hire a general contractor, would he/she hire subcontractors on his/her own and move forward?

Thank you for comments. I found Houzz a really nice resource. I also plan to extend a sun room or enclosed porch, which is to be connected to garage (to be built) along with mudroom. In this case, should I hire general contractor or can I build garage and mudroom first and then hire porch contractor?

I am a complete newbie in this world and am trying to bid for hiring contractors. I need to build an attached garage, roof repair/replacement, open up kitchen, and make two mudrooms. I am using angies list and home advisor to find best deals but I think I need to meet builders and contractors to show the property first.

I am not sure of the overall process for bidding as This is my first.

Should I pay to meet and show them the property in order to get a quotes?

If I like one specific contractor, should I tell other contractors that you are not hired?

Just not sure this entire process. Any comments will be appreciated!

I was wondering if airbnb may be a good option near Millennium park. Maybe starting with studio or 1 bed 1 bath condo at $200K (with less than $400 HOA). I may need to stay there for a few months per year, and plan to rent for the rest. Do you think it can be a good plan? can anybody who knows in Chicago comment?
