@Maya McCoy, thanks - super helpful! Any idea what the name of the reality show is? Would like to check it out. (if only for entertainment!)

@Michael King all the same questions I'm asking myself. News outlets are claiming that investors have been lining-up to get in on the action...but I haven't been able to verify who any of them are. So not sure how valid any of the claims actually are. Finally decided to turn to the BP community.

Agree, if anything, the play is probably more of a vacation home for personal use - and a prayer that someday the towns attract more tourism and rental yields.

Also curious how many hidden costs there are with something like this.

Anyways...figured I'd throw it out to BP to see if anyone had actually taken the plunge and given it a go. Or knows someone who has.

Has anyone explored these $1 property opportunities in Italy? Curious what people's experience has been with it.

@Chasity Ware

Love it! and I echo @Mike Lambert's comments.

The risk of internationalizing is significant, particularly if you don't have deep experience and/or contacts in the local market. Managing the currency risk alone is a task in itself. Not to mention the political risk and significantly different market dynamics than what we might be used to here in the U.S. For example, debt financing for expats is an entirely different ballgame.

My $.02 would be to figure out exactly WHY you want to globalize your portfolio. If its purely to maximize risk-adjusted returns, then there's certainly an opportunity for that but IMO, I wouldn't go it alone.  I'd start small, as a passive investor to learn the ropes and slowly build your level of involvement over time. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than going all in at once on your own, and risking a learning experience through failure.

Happy to chat more offline if you want. I'm in a similar boat to what it sounds like you are, so happy to share my perspective and exchange ideas.

Interesting discussion. Thanks for sharing. Curious if you have heard of anyone doing this in markets outside the U.S.?

Does anyone have any experience with emerging / frontier markets short-term rentals? I travel internationally a lot for work, and am beginning to explore how I could build a small portfolio of homes in the cities I work out of.
