What is an index fund? And how is it different from a ROTH IRA?

Wow, you really don't know much about stock investing. An index fund is just a mutual fund that tracks a particular index such as the S&P 500. Or the Midcap400.

A Roth IRA or Roth 401K plan are tax free vehicles to hold that index fund in. If I were in your shoes I'd pick a Roth all day long as it's tax free when you cash out. As long as you leave it in there for at least 5 yrs. if your co contributes $$ into your account in a Roth it's like getting free money.

index funds are a perfect choice for a 401K plan. Very low expenses and it will beat most actively managed funds out there. There are many index funds out there so maybe you should diversify. Don't just put all your $$ in one index fund that invests in the USA for instance. There's global index funds that can perform and give you a steady return.

Good luck.

what makes you think I will get good advice and input from forums like this? I'm an active member of another forum in another industry and as I feel I can offer decent advice, it's amazing that many do not want to take up on such input. There's a lot of clueless newbies out there. That applies to many industries and forums.

I've joined here just mostly as an observer. I'm not a fan of bashing RE "gurus" as many of you enjoy. Don't you have anything better to do? Why not concentrate on building your business and showing a positive attitude. I'm not sure what your angle or intent is. I worked with Ron Legrand many years ago in a boot camp in south FL. It cost around $3K as I recall. Not cheap even then but was filled with a wealth of knowledge. Ron is a good and very knowledgable guy. He never struck me as one of those typical snake oil salesmen. But he's also there to make $$ that's why he's in business. But I'm sure he has helped many people since I rode off into the sunset. To tar every guru out there with the same brush is ridiculous. There are many folks out there who just want to poison other peoples' ambitions by slamming folks who know the business inside out but charge a significant fee for doing so. There's way too much negativity out there. We seem to wallow in it.

Well, you either pay it or go try and DIY. Or maybe you will accomplish your mission just by tuning into this forum/website. But I don't fancy your chances of success. But hey....go prove me wrong.

You have to start somewhere. It's like trying to work with a realtor. Many of them are flat out useless. They have no idea about basic business or how to talk to people. But on occasion I come across a wonderful agent or broker and so we can work together.  If I can find one snippet of info here, then I guess it's worth joining up, but I'm looking beyond this forum for input and assistance in growing my business. It takes time to get the confidence and most of you out there don't want to work it really hard or consistently. Most will fall by the wayside and then blame somebody else for their failures.

If you are going to invest in yourself and work with a mentor, choose wisely, do your research as I have done and stick to a plan. Sometimes I just think that forums like this are OK, but really, I take a lot of the stuff/opinions on here with a grain of salt. But that's me, YMMV.

I shall continue to dig and find out my true niche and work with folks who are like minded and that we can agree on how to move forward.

Good luck.
