Post: Wood-burning fireplace in 4-plex: should it stay or go?

I am remodeling one apartment in a 4-plex. Each unit has a fireplace, and I would like to eventually remove them all for safety, insurance, and space reasons. This post is meant to seek out thoughts on what to best do with them.

The unit I am working in is below another one, so removing this one probably means that I would need to replace the one above at the same time. I am assuming that the bottom chimney supports the top one, but before doing anything would obviously have a pro come and look.

Another option I am considering is to put an electric 'fake' fireplace inserted where the wood currently goes. Is that a good idea? I would like to know 1) if it would be safe, and 2) if it would just be tacky?

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

That's great @Wade_Sikkink! Are you going to manage it all yourself, or hire a property management company? If the latter, who do you work with in this area? I currently have a 4-plex in Lincoln and am also looking for something bigger.

I'd be interested in meeting as well - I don't know how to start a BP meetup, but perhaps one is in order?

Welcome @Mark Bruntz! I also live and invest in Lincoln, and am relatively new to real estate. Currently looking to buy another multi-family if the numbers work, and am remodeling one unit in another. It has definitely been a learning experience in both skills needed and costs involved.

I love Val's, but have a conflict I can't get out of next Thursday. Based on the newsletter alone, I am very interested in getting involved. Do please let us know how it goes next week William.

Thanks for sharing! I have also searched before (it's been a while), but came up dry.

I am as well - I did a quick search here in the forum, and there are quite a few in our area. I would also be interested in meeting at some point.
