@Matthew Maggy You must really hate painting!  You can just flat-tape the new drywall or you could have used a edge bead (before you hung the sheets but it's never going to look right unless you properly tape the seams and paint everything.  You have to paint the new walls anyway, right?

@Dawn Latoyce I'd advise you to have as complete a 'scope of work' as possible. It is so much easier for the contractor when the customer knows what they want.  It shows that you're serious, thoughtful and organized. And it is helpful to you to compare quotes since they will all be based on the same list.

.@Don Meinke 3/8" plywood will add very little strength to your treads; why do you need to strengthen them?  Can't you just add another stringer?  I also would make every effort to provide proper headroom (min 80") but without having all the pertinent dimensions, it's impossible to offer specific suggestions.

@Matt Good Nothing really works: all of the screen options get covered and need to be cleaned; all of the engineered gutters (e.g. Leaf Guard) don't capture all the water.  I think it's best to trim back the trees.

@Janice R. You can give tips if you want but I don't think they're expected nor even appropriate.  I too would find it off-putting were a repairman hinting towards a tip.

@Ellie Hanson, I realize, of course, this is not a religious forum but since you wrote this, I feel it should be addressed: What you describe here is called "antinomianism" and the Bible very clearly speaks against this line of reasoning (e.g. Romans 6: 1-2). The Bible also clearly teaches that all are sinners: both secular and "spiritual" (Romans 3: 10-18).

I'm not sure why some of you guys don't like the shears. I think they work great and it's nice having no dust. Sometimes it's necessary to clean up the cuts a bit with a surform plane but that only takes a second.  My shears cost $180.00 and are worth every penny.  I would never go back to the dust and rapidly dulled, expensive saw blades.  Everyone has their own methods though.   :)

I agree that you should not use finish nails though sometimes I will if it's a column of very narrow pieces, e.g. between a corner and a door, where a full-size nail would split the piece.

I have not used the relatively new pre-finished Hardie but I want to and might on my next house.  Has anyone here used it?  What were your impressions?
