@Mark Gagner  I would inform him that he is required by law to provide you with that information and that you will be including the transaction, with his name, in your tax return anyway.  He will be in trouble with the IRS. I would also try to document the request and his refusal.

I've had to deal with this before too and learned: No completed W-9; No payment. :)

@Katie Neason  A lesson in dealing with the male ego:

If you make a suggestion, do it in such a way as to make him think it was his idea!  :)

@Katie Neason Your pic looks like plywood.

@Serge S. Though there is absolutely nothing wrong with building personal wealth, I think, as you've come to see, that financial goals alone, are ever moving and never ending.

Perhaps a better measure is: Is my work satisfying and fulfilling?  Is it sufficiently challenging?  Does it help others?

To my mind, those are the elements that make business worthy of lifelong pursuit.

@Katie Neason  The contractor is always right!   :)

Actually, in this case I think he's wrong.  I'll bet he's using the wrong primer. He should use shellac-based primer. Regular oil-based is not enough. It has to be shellac-based.  Then you will not have any bleed-through.

@Jason Mak I don't "undercut" or care what the other bids are. My numbers are my numbers and I charge what I have to charge.

I think it is very unprofessional for one contractor to badmouth another and that guy is a big fat jerk for doing so!!  :)

@Andy C.  "I've found most contractors to be bums".  Ahem.  :)

@Tony Ngo Painter caulks...preferably after he's primed everything.

@Matt Jones mentioned, you'll likely have to update all or most of the major systems if they haven't been previously done. Foundation issues can be a big problem too. I think it will cost a bit more than you've figured but it depends. It definitely sounds like it has potential.  Good luck!

@Vonetta Booker I always look for opportunities to meet the adjoining neighbors but I don't generally knock on their door. They usually come over because they're curious about what's going on. Besides a desire to be friendly, @Julia Blythe gives good  practical reasons!
