Post: Where's the Money in Being An Agent?

Johnny,

As in every other career, you can be very successful as a Real Estate Agent if you are passionate, persistent and dedicated to the profession.  Being a Realtor is not for the faint of heart.  If you think a Doctor is the only career where you work 24/7 than you are in for a rude awakening.

I've seen Realtors easily make over 100k.  It's tough when you first start out.  Basically you have to let everyone you know in your SOI (Sphere of Influence) that you are in Real Estate and continuously remind them with all that you do (i.e. open houses, listings, closed sales, etc).  With social media these days it makes things a lot easier but that's not enough.  You have to pound the pavement, knock on doors, send out postcards, hold open houses for other agents under your broker until you start making money.  Eventually after a year or two you will start getting referrals and that's when your career starts to take off.

I know agents that are very successful and its only because they have been at it for 10 to 15 years.  If you love helping people sell their homes or find that perfect home than you are going to enjoy this career no matter how gut wrenching it can be.  No one prepares you for how emotional of a transaction this can be for buyers and sellers.  Be ready for that!

The great thing about being a Realtor is you can make as little or as much as you want depending how hard you work at it.  If you are the type of person that will knock on a FBSO and introduce yourself every time you see one and be persistent enough to keep coming back for 10 weeks until they list with you (and they will)...then you will make a killing.

Good luck brother!

Definitely look into Cheryl's idea.  Access is a great tool if you have it.  Good luck!

Hi All,

Just wanted to say hi to everyone here on BP. I've been a member for a while but just started becoming active here.  I am very impressed with the amount of resources available here as well as the amazing collaborative spirit that exists with all its members.

Just a little about myself, I am based out of South Florida (Miami to be exact).  Have over 20 years of Software Engineering / HIT Consulting experience.  I also happen to be a South Florida Realtor (I've had my license since 2005). I've mostly helped friends / family and did a little of my own investing / property management.

I am hoping to meet up with other investors in South Florida that may be interested in working on some deals together.  If anyone needs Realtor assistance feel free to contact me.  Cheers!

@Clayton P.

Assuming you have two spreadsheets:

List 1. Your mailing addresses and

List 2. All the listings in your farm area (can be exported from MLS)

then you can have a VBA program do the reconciliation for you. Basically on a line by line basis check if address in List 1 is in List 2...if it is remove it. This is assuming you have columns for addresses that are matchable (i.e. 123 Main Street). Sounds like an interesting project. I have a software engineering background..let me know if you need any help with this.
