Welcome to BP!

Yes real estate here in Canada is like real estate in the U.S.A., or most other places, but there are differences in the financial, regulatory and taxation environments in which real estate is bought, sold and operated.

Are your children old enough that you have an inkling of where they are likely to attend post-secondary eduction (i.e.  stay in Ottawa, or go elsewhere).   Looking at small (1 - 4 unit) student rentals can provide both solid income and a place for your kids to reside when they attend college or university.

Otherwise, Ottawa, being a government and university City with a healthy smattering of high-tech, has a fairly stable rental market ... it reminded me of a big Fredericton.   I was in the City last summer for work and looked at a few properties in Westboro (Richmond) - which has turned around considerably from what I remember in the 1980s.   I also looked at a couple over by the experimental farm and Carleton.

Hi Roy is pleasure to meet you and yes Westboro is growing with a lot condos. That's great you have some there. In the 80' it was a lot different then it is now. That's great to hear that ottawa been growing. As for whosaling  I was told it's impossible by realtors. We were able to do that back then not now. Only in Toronto and British Columbia.
