Thanks for all the answers.  Even a couple month ago my plan was to just buy me a home when my lease is up in October and that be all the real estate I own.  As such, I am still investigating real estate investing, and may decide against it, hence my request for information.

I figure I still have a few months to do some homework and decide if I want to get involved, but if I do, I know I'm not ready for the commitment yet of being a landlord, though that would be the eventual goal.  I am afraid I would be investing on a whim without doing my homework and find myself in over my head and in trouble.  If I were to decided to invest, my goal for a condo would be to buy me time to educate myself more and find my feet as a home owner.  I could then either sell or rent,

Hi all,

Honestly, at the moment I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the information I'm finding and aren't quite sure even how to untangle it all, a case of not knowing enough to ask questions.  Any ideas of where to focus my studies first?

I have a good job that I really enjoy so if I get into real estate it will be a small side gig, and never more than a hobby.  My interests are more toward the buy and hold idea, using a property manager to handle the day to day issues, while I'm at work.  My goal would be to see what I could make in real estate with a few dollars and maybe use it to replace my job when I retire (hopefully 25 years).

At the moment I'm renting so my thought is to buy an inexpensive condo (~50K) to live in for a couple of years while I add to my savings, and then see where I go from there.  I really wouldn't be comfortable buying some place more than about $200K or so at the high end, and only then if it was a multifamily other wise I would feel like I was drowning in debt.

Thanks much,

--Laniece

@Brittany Villamil Thanks for asking this,  I'm in a somewhat similar position (not married though) and trying to figure out where to go.

Hi,

My name is Laniece and being I'm finally located in one place for the foreseeable future I'm hoping to put down roots.  I have a few months before my lease it up, and I've started kicking around the idea lately of trying to acquire some rental properties in the upcoming years, but have not decided yet.  At this point I'm mainly trying to gather information to make some decisions about if I'm going to buy something I can turn into a rental in a few years, try to stretch and do a multifamily building, or forget it and just buy a home I want to stay in and put my money elsewhere.
