Most of the Northern neighborhoods of Chicago city limits are good. If suburbs are an option, I would also include Evanston, Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Northbrook, or Frankfort area, although drive times to downtown can range from 20 minutes on a good day to easily 1 hour + on a bad day during rush hour or bad weather.
If he's up for looking a bit further, Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles are also awesome little suburbs on the far western part of the suburbs. Highly rated schools, tons of huge houses, and easily walkable downtown areas with a good small town feel mixed with ample things to do, restaurants, etc.
I'm partially biased since I live in the West burbs, but there are plenty of good areas in and around Chicago.

@Anthony Kondor aren't you a Realtor? I know I can pull that info off of the MLS in a few minutes for just about any area in Chicagoland or Illinois, I'm sure you could do the same. Look under the "additional information" tab on the top right of any of the listings and look at infosparks.
Also, www.google.com

An attorney will cost you around $500 typically, it's per transaction not based on sales price, so given other closing costs I wouldn't be shocked with the number they gave you.
