I'm all for driving a beater. In fact, the car I drive now is a 2000 Nissan Xterra with 227k miles. It certainly has its problem but I am not about to get rid of it any time soon. The problem with Volvo's is that they are expensive to repair, as many times you must take them to a Volvo certified mechanic, and with some repairs, you have to take them to the dealer. I find their parts to be more expensive as well.

The problem is that the car becomes a reflection of yourself. A beater doesn't say frugal, it says poor. Frugal is driving a 2010 Camry. No one likes to do business with people who look broke. And thats the message that you start to give to people driving a beater.

The other problem is the day that it doesn't start is the day that you will need it most. You're late to a important meeting, what's the first thing that comes out of your mouth "sorry, car wouldn't start". And the people you are meeting instantly form an opinion about you.

It depends how you take care of your "beater."  I drive a 2006 Honda Civic that I keep garaged and well maintained.  It currently has 115k miles and should run for several more years before I have to put her down.  I consider it a "beater," in that I can put miles on it and "beat" on it without worrying.  I would consider a 2010 Camry to be a "beater" too, for similar reasons.

There is another LA meetup thread here:

Does it have lasers?  Sharks?  Sharks with lasers tied to their freakin' heads? That would make it awesome!  It might increase your liability though...

In all seriousness, no one can really tell you without knowing all the facts and the law of your state.  For example, if your "security system" did have lasers or some type of "spring trap" it may be illegal and you could face liability if it hurt someone.  If you're talking about the run-of-the-mill alarm system, it might actually mitigate liability by better restricting access to the premises, etc.  Again, it may be very specific to where you live and the facts of your situation.

Here's a legal guide to retail liability in Alaska that might be helpful to you, and you may want to give those folks a call if you're really concerned (I have nothing to do with them, just found it online):

Welcome @Shannon Shue.  You may want to introduce yourself over here as well!

Congrats @Sean Cutt, good to hear.

Your question is clear, your intentions are not.  While you might have valid reasons for maintaining anonymity, asking such questions implies there may be illegal activity involved.  If that's the case, this is not the appropriate forum for your question and you should seek the services of a qualified attorney who can provide counsel regarding the specifics of your situation.

Most people are proud of the businesses they run and have no qualms about being associated with them.  Posts like this raise red flags, especially when you had your account suspended for providing a name other than your own and you provide no information in your profile.  You may have honorable intentions, it just doesn't look good.

Cash is king. I would finance the car, but only if I could put that cash to use some other way. If it's going to sit in your savings account earning less than 1% then it doesn't make sense to finance.
