If I haven’t been in or my maintenance man hasn’t been in all the units in a building in over the course of the year I schedule a smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector check and have my maintenance man go in to test the units and scope things out.

You need a carbon monoxide and smoke detector in the required rooms, that is pretty inexpensive and safe.
