When I'm planning a larger project, I go on eBay and buy 15% off HD coupons with my 2% credit card, then I pick up my supplies, depending on the project you will have to do separate transactions because each coupon has a $200 max discount, works well for me.

I have priced both Lowe’s and HD as comparison and HD seems to have better lower prices though they don’t carry the same manufactured items too much.

I think you see a lot of houses look the same because people - whether DIY'ers or contractor's - are going to Lowe's or HD and buying most of their materials, so most people are buying the same items.
