What you're describing sounds like an equity skimming scam that many states have outlawed.

I just did a brief skim, but it seems like there are more emotions here than trying to treat it like a business.

Or we could just admit that the realtors, lenders, and investors milking people dry and exploiting every law, ordinance and misguided government policy they could get their hands on was the problem. 

His sole objective in life coming out of the depression was for us to have a roof over our head, all the food we could eat and all the milk we could drink.
