The sliders are still generally solid wood outer frames and the worst the tenants can do is knock it off the track or damage the plastic guide on the floor, which is cheap to replace.

The other thing you can do is put some plastic (like they use to hold in insulation) under the home and tack it to the floor joists.

The space was heated, but cold air goes to the ground, which is where the water pipe was.Another thing to keep in mind is that PEX pipe is less likely to burst when it freezes, since it is plastic.
