Is this an acceptable substitute, or are electric fireplaces considered hopelessly faux and cheesy? 

@Justin Cobb looks pretty nice, but observations:1) Kitchen countertop color doesn't go with the rest of the kitchen or the house at all.  2) Why is there a wardrobe next to one of the fireplaces?

Since it has a fireplace as a rental, I am assuming I would have to have that inspected?

Last house we did an accent trim and paint over the fireplace that just blew away most of the people that viewed.

The inspection report shows that there is structural damage (leaning walls on the exterior of the house), needs a new roof, HVAC, windows, doors, and a new deck, repairs to the crawlspace and fireplaces. 

For example, the mortar holding up the fireplace was closer to sand than cement.
