Out of state buyer has questions

I'm an out of state buyer looking to buy a SFH in the Anderson/Indianapolis area. My credit union doesn't do out of state financing. Should I start with a real estate agent and let the agent recommend a lender or find one myself? Do local credit unions finance mortgages for non members or should I look for a bank? Any suggestions are appreciated.
