What kind of home can you buy for $1 million (USD) in your area?

My area is cheap (Grays Harbor County, Washington, about 2 hours SW of Seattle) - the most expensive home in my town was $375,000 and it was a huge mansion with lots of land. But I expanded my search out 20 miles and, as you get close to the beach, you find stuff like this:

A good rehabbed example of what you can buy where I live, on the west side near downtown in Santa Barbara. Cute and all. But most non-Californians will be underwhelmed by the 2/1 1400 square feet. It's all about the lifestyle and the weather here.

For $995,000 you can buy this place about 1/2 mile from my house in Redwood City, CA. RWC is half way between San Jose and San Francisco and is, relatively speaking, one of the more affordable towns on the Peninsula. This is a 3br/2ba, 1270sqft, 1953 build, on 1/8th acre. Nice inside but nothing to write home about. Truth be told $1,000,000 won't get it. It just got listed, has probably gotten multiple offers, and will sell for closer to $1,050,000 in the current market.

Coming in at 1,250 sq ft, the property is listed at $1.15MM. This is about a 1/2 mile from my apartment near Lake Merritt, in Jack London Square, in Oakland CA. You don't get a yard, and you have to pay HOA. But spectacular views.

Listed at $926/ft, which is high even for this area, but it's been on the market for a while, so you might be able to get it for $1MM..

If this house were not in the Marina district of San Francisco, you wouldn't know that the seller is asking anywhere near the list price of $16,000,000...

It varies if you want to be in the City of Philadelphia or surrounding suburbs. Also whether you want to be in the downtown center city area near all of the Artsy fartsy galleries, clubs etc, or do you prefer the tourists area, or maybe living it up by the waterfront {there are many choice hot spots}. Another option, if you want to be in another section that's offers a suburban appeal yet is still in the city limits such as Chestnut Hill / Mt. Airy sections of the city. Then you'll have to decide if you want a condo, townhouse or mini-mansion. Here are a few links within the city limits (downtown):

Kudos,

Lots of areas in my area, 1000000 will get you a monster house anywhere in the surrounding counties. Figure 7+ bed 4+ bath

Well, around here, you could buy about half the entire town! Seriously, unless you're buying a large, working farm, the biggest, fanciest house in the county wouldn't sell for more than $250,000. It's all location, location, location . . .

Well, i prefer you buy Condos. you owned it, you earn by renting it too. Just Pm me For More Details about Condos here In Philippines. feel free to Pm me. :)

In my are Austin,Tx. with $1M you can get condo with city view and close to the "famous 6th st".

this 2/1, 875 sq ft POS just went for $1.7 mil near me...

Just under 4700 sq feet in my town. Listed for $1.025M (It started a year ago at $1.3M, we'll see what price it sells for). It's on 5 acres, but the area typically has 1-1.5 acre lots.

Why would you ever want to spend $1M on a home? You'd have to spend another $1M for staff to maintain the place, haha.
