So I found a property that was purchased at an auction. And the sheriff deed registration shows the purchase price of $100. Is this really the true sales price? Probably not. So how do I find out what the new owner actually paid?

Technically, that Was the bid/sale price. Tpyically, the bank may publish a "we're bidding up to this amount" number. Here it is referred to a Plaintiff Maximum Bid, serves as a sort of reserve price. Since the bank has to pay a percentage fee of the bid amount in clerk/sheriff court costs, they try to avoid people bidding up to say $75k on a property they are going to bid up to $100k on, to avoid paying the fees on $75k. Hence, no one bothers bidding because they aren't willing to go to $100k, so the bank gets the property for the $100 "opening bid". It used to be kind of funny when newbies would come to the auction, not realizing this, thinking they were going to buy a bunch of properties for $200.
