Due diligence while buying house built in the 1970s
Hi all, thinking of buying a property in Dallas, TX area built in 1972. I haven't bought a property of this age before. Trying to do all the usual due diligence. Looking for advice on what all factors to consider especially while buying an older house like this. Will the usual home inspection suffice or should anything additional be done that the home inspectors might not usually look for? Thanks.

You might want to look at the age of the sewer pipes and get them scoped. If they have not been replaced, they could be nearing the end of their lifespan if it is cast iron. Some say they will last 100 years and maybe some do, but I also see plenty that seem to last about 50-60 around here. Maybe because of the expansive soils we have. When they get to be this age, I start looking for PVC cleanouts at the subject house as well as the homes around it in the neighborhood.

Water lines are probably copper. Hire a plumber to detect current leaks or past leaks by examining repaired and repainted sheetrock, or cupped wood flooring. As the poster above said, ensure sewer lines flow well and get them scoped.
