What does a lunch with a mentor look like?

My name is Michael Goodman. I am a newbie to real estate investing in Indianapolis, IN. I have been reading, listening to podcast, driving neighborhoods in my farm area, and attending Meet Ups and REIA meetings. Asking for help and advice is foreign to me since I usually just roll up my sleeves and go with the trial and error method. I'm trying a different approach. I was able to get the attention of a person I admire with 23 years of experience and is at the top 5% of their region and set up a lunch.

This question is for the Mentors; what did the mentee do to impress or gain your attention to take them under your wing? What did they offer or what value did they bring to the table?

Hey @Michael Goodman. I love this question! In no particular order, here's my list of things to do:

  • Be on time (if not early).
  • Bring paper and pen and take notes.
  • Have a written plan already in hand. Use the meeting to get feedback on the plan. Do not roll up without a clue and expect the mentor to give you one.
  • Ask them the question, "How do you create value for your clients?"
  • Ask them the question, "How can I create value for you?"
  • Ask them the question, "Who else do I need to meet?"
  • Get their physical address and mail them a written "Thank you" note within 12 hours of the meeting.

The fact that you're even asking this question suggests you'll probably do well during the meeting no matter what. Good luck!
