Thanks @Eric S. I didn't realize the Heights is walking distance to the PATH? Which stop Grove or JS?

Hi BP Community!
My wife and I recently decided that our first home purchase is going to be a house hack. I work in finance (read really long hours), in downtown Manhattan, so having a short commute is a must. My wife works near the GWB so we also can't go too far south. We started looking where we currently live but the property taxes just kill any 2 families we've looked at so far. People keep telling me that I'm crazy for even trying, it can't be done, blah blah blah. I refuse to believe this! We've considered Newark but my wife is wary about moving too far in front of the path of progress and there aren't many 2-4 family buildings that are close to the nicer high rises. Are there any BP'ers out there that have successfully pulled off a house hack in decent towns in Southern Bergen, Essex, Union, or Hudson counties?

Congratulations @Laura H. I just started my RE/BP journey a few weeks ago and your story serves as great motivation!

@Alicia Mahase I'm a CFA in the NYC area just starting out too. If send me a request if you are interested in teaming up and sharing as we both learn and make mistakes. Have you checked any of the REIAs in the NYC area?

@Cody Coffin welcome to BP. I just posted my introduction this week as well! There are a bunch of extremely helpful people here that invest in the Kansas City area. I've been blown away with all the thoughtful and detailed advice I've gotten so far. Send me a request if you want to team up and share thoughts and questions as we both learn.

@Larry Fried and @Clayton Mobley wow I am blown away by your detailed answers and help. I really appreciate it. I have been looking at turnkey because I currently work about 60-70 hours a week at my day job and am investing out of state. As you mentioned Clayton, this is just a temporary solution. I do plan on being more active in the investment process as I gain more experience. As both of you already mentioned as well, I would never purchase a property or land without seeing it first and vetting the property managers. Trust but verify, right?

@Larry Fried Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm still trying to figure that part out. It's actually the thing I really need to work on. I have considered going through a turnkey provider for my first property as a method of learning the ropes. But I am hoping to learn more about how to source deals through bigger pocket in both the guides and learning from experienced investors.
