Hey Jordan,
Welcome to BP! I am from Toronto, but I have fond memories of the Maritimes. I also have some friends on the island. I believe there are a couple of users on BP that are from the Maritimes, hopefully they weigh in.
Thanks for posting the listing. What options were you thinking of? What are your hold period options? I ask these questions as a general third party who is not familiar with that market.

@Roy N. great point re taxes. Your comments are always spot on.
Canada is the land of "free" healthcare, but it also is the land of taxes on worldwide income ...so @Dennis Marcelo you should connect with a CPA or a tax practitioner that is familiar with the Canada/US tax convention. Of course it could not hurt to get professional advice from professionals both side of the border - well it may hurt your wallet.
@Mark Creason also raises a very important point. I certainly would not rely solely on the guidance of an attorney in one state if I planned on being active in another.

@Dennis M., you may also want to look into corporate commercial law firms in Buffalo, NY. Not only can you find very good corporate attorneys for a fraction of the NYC billable hour, but given the proximity to Toronto, it won't be hard to meet face to face if need be.
We have referred some very complex corporate and securities work to Buffalo attorneys and have always been satisfied.
Atro Levy may be another good option. I have not done any work with that firm, but I am familiar with them - I believe a big part of their practice is dedicated to snowbirds.

Funding sources north of the border might be harder to come across as of late. Canadian investors are definitely looking at the CAD/USD exchange before opening their wallets.
Personally, I would solidify one or two local investors for a proposed deal and then ask them to expand their network.

Will the hotel have to be managed directly by the prospective purchaser? Or do you estimate there being enough revenue for a hotel management company to be retained?
If the later, find a comparable hotel in Spain and other areas of Portugal and solicit the hotel land owners (not the hotel operators).

Greetings Bronwen.
Feel free to keep me up to date with your findings in Shanghai :) Given that you have "boots on the ground" in China, I would be curious to hear your experiences. Make sure you connect with a credible legal professional there as property law is obviously much different than back home.
What brought you to Shanghai?
Cory.

Great forum!
I am a corporate/commercial lawyer in Toronto, with an interest in non-residential RE investing (although I do have a res rental unit). Looking forward to learning from, and connecting with, the many great minds and personalities I see on the forum.
My first question - does anyone have any mobile apps/tools that they use to follow macroeconomic trends and indicators (both RE and non RE indicators)? I have been using FRED's mobile app, but I would like something with a more Canadian focus and better user interface. I also use a website called UECONOMICS, but I would love to find a mobile app that updates regularly.
