@Samson Kay I'm not legally allowed to comment on "safety." However, you can find data on all Chicago neighborhoods here: http://crime.chicagotribune.com/

@Samson Kay Congratulations on your new job. IMHO, the only thing worse than a commute to the city is the "reverse commute" to the suburbs. I've seen it make people go insane. It doesn't help that 55 is a parking lot. Google might tell you 45 minutes, but it's going to be much, much worse. With all due respect, you may want to try the commute (both in the morning AND in the evening) a few times to see if you can take it. If you're dead set on living in the city, see if you can negotiate a 6 AM start time and a 3 PM departure.

Back to real estate. I like those neighborhoods that @Brie Schmidt

Can you collect a non-refundable "move-in fee" in lieu of the security deposit? We're seeing that more and more in Chicago with the large property management players. They'll bypass the security deposit altogether and collect $250-400 per adult occupant.

Most municipalities post all of this info online. With a quick Google search I found the below:

I own a property in Charlotte and am not being charged any additional fees for being out of state. My property taxes are in line with what Chris and Jared mentioned above. Cheers!

I like this idea, @Ryan Bolus

As far as execution, set a hard date and make it abundantly clear that all cars need to be removed on a certain date for "parking lot maintenance" and that anything left there will be towed at the owner's expense. Put flyers on all cars weeks beforehand and put up temporary signs as well.

Good luck and congrats on the property. Cheers!

@Brie Schmidt "I pay about $40 a month for all my city 3 flats."

Really?!? Are you metered? I'm close to $100 a month on my three-flat. I am not metered.

Monitoring this topic. I've heard rumblings in Illinois about folks who are depressed, bi-polar, PTSD, etc. being able to have "support animals." My understanding is that it went beyond dogs and it was only a matter of time of somebody saying "I'm depressed, I need my pit bull to accompany me." I don't know the rules, but would like to see what conclusions you come to.
