I would say $1600 might be a little high for that area of Ewing. You want to stay north of Olden Ave (near The College of NJ). You also might want to consider the year the house was built and the expected maintenance for each particular property.

@Julie Verardi I'd say a you wouldn't be able to find a good real state attorney for less than $1000 to close on a two family in JC. Definitely make sure they specialize in Real Estate.

The closer you are to the light rail on Garfield, the nicer the area. As you get further, the area gets sketchy. Your best bet is to walk the area and get a feel for it yourself. The newer construction 2-family homes which were built in 2006 sold for ridiculous prices and are now getting foreclosed on. You could probably get a good deal on one that doesn't need too much work.
