Waybe Brooks--  why is it so hard to give me when I ask politely/confidently and its public info?  I can understand if the discrepancy was do to an illegality.  But the lady denied me because she claimed of there being an illegality if I used the information for self gain.

I am having trouble in Charleston, SC.  We have a database but it only searches by names and it dates all the way back to 1983 so finding recent probates is difficult and extremely time consuming... anyone have suggestions?

I was told by a lady working at the courthouse today that it is illegal to use the information for self gain.  She did not even ask what my purpose was except that I can look up the probates by last name in the database.  That is completely inconvenient because it is all estate probates since the 1980's!  It would take a very very long time to go through it all and record it, in addition I would have to do this on a regular basis just to find new leads.  Can someone shine some light onto the situation for me.  Maybe the legality of requesting this public information...

Thank you for the prompt response!  So I have the right to have the full, most recent list emailed, or printed out as a hard copy and given to me?  I did not want to argue because she informed me that using that information for self gain was illegal and she might have even said for research as well.  I will surely (politely) request again because going through the online search database since the early 30+ years is very very tedious and time consuming.

My local courthouse does not give away the records for probates, because they deem that as being used for personal gains, which they say is illegal. However there is a database with limited info where you have to go through each letter of the alphabet with probates from the 90's to present day. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get probate leads?
