Austin is the new kid on the block for people seeking to relocate.

British personal finance platform money.co.uk ranks Austin the No. 1 city in the world for people hunting for a new place to live. Earlier this year, polling results released by the Boston Consulting Group and The Network, a recruiting alliance, placed London atop the list of the world’s best spots for relocating workers.

How did Austin, in the eyes of money.co.uk, become the relocation capital of the world? The website examined eight factors: home prices, cost of living, average salary, weather, number of restaurants, number of green spaces, internet speed, and life expectancy.

A new study from personal finance website SmartAsset ranks Austin and neighboring Round Rock as two of the nation’s top 50 boomtowns.

To come up with its list of boomtowns, SmartAsset evaluated data for 500 of the largest U.S. cities. It looked at growth factors for each city such as five-year population change, average yearly growth in economic output (GDP), five-year change in number of businesses, five-year growth in housing, and August 2021 unemployment rate.

Austin clocks in at No. 17 in the U.S. and No. 3 in Texas. The Capital City saw an 8.03 percent change in population, 16.4 percent change in establishments, and 12.8 percent change in housing growth during the time period studied. On SmartAsset’s 100-point boomtown scale, Austin earns a score of 89.51.

Round Rock ties for 25th in the U.S. and takes fourth place in Texas, with an 18.53 percent change in population, 29.9 percent growth in businesses, and 23.15 percent change in housing. In total, Round Rock scores 86.97 points.

Nearby New Braunfels, with a score of 89.82, zooms ahead of Austin and Round Rock in the rankings, tying for No. 14 in the U.S. and ranking No. 2 in Texas. New Braunfels’ population skyrocketed 36.03 percent in five years, and the housing rate jumped more than 50 percent.

Unless you’ve been living way off the grid the past couple of years, you’re fully aware that Austin ranks among the hottest residential real estate markets in the U.S. What you may not realize, though, is that it’s also among the country’s hottest commercial real estate markets.

In a recently released report, the National Association of Realtors identifies Austin as one of the top 10 commercial real estate markets in the U.S. San Antonio is the only other Texas market to appear on the unranked list.

Austin’s commercial real estate sector has benefited from an influx of companies, particularly in the tech industry, that are moving out of California.

real estate website Point2 has developed a list of the best places for life after college, and Austin — home of the University of Texas — hooks the No. 1 ranking.

The website looked at an array of factors to come up with its ranking, such as population growth, business growth, median age, household income growth, poverty rate, and housing availability and prices.

Point2 considered only the 86 places that host the country’s 100 most successful colleges and universities, as rated by U.S. News & World Report.

Other Texas communities on the list are:

  • No. 5 Fort Worth, home of Texas Christian University.
  • No. 17 College Station, home of Texas A&M University.
  • No. 21 Dallas, home of Southern Methodist University.
  • No. 24 Waco, home of Baylor University.
  • No. 33 Houston, home of Rice University.

Congressional leaders released a long-awaited framework Thursday for President Joe Biden’s signature Build Back Better plan, proposing a top-line price tag  of $1.75 trillion which includes investments in affordable housing and down-payment assistance and spares real estate investment from the most feared taxes.

The plan is paid for with new taxes on high-income individuals and businesses, but the most feared taxes on real estate investment were excluded.


“Some of the earlier tax proposals floated would have devastated the real estate sector, which makes up nearly one-fifth of the entire economy,” McGahn says. “This framework has no 1031 like-kind exchange limits, no capital gains tax increases, no change in step-up in basis, no tax on unrealized capital gains, no increased estate tax, no carried-interest provisions, and no 199A limits. The tax provision of this framework is very positive for consumers, property owners, and the real estate economy.”

Tesla could be leaving its longtime Silicon Valley home for Austin, Texas, a city that has attracted a flood of tech companies and remote workers over the last year and a half.

The automaker's annual shareholder meeting on Thursday is taking place not in the Bay Area as usual, but in the Texas capitol. It's the latest sign that after moving much of his life and business to the Lone Star State, Tesla CEO Elon Musk may be moving Tesla's headquarters there as well.

The Austin-San Antonio corridor's population surge in recent years is among the most notable growth stories in the country, though experts warn there are growing pains to consider.

The corridor could soon compare to large metroplexes like the Dallas-Fort Worth region, experts have said, and there is evidence that's already taking shape. More huge neighborhoods are sprouting along the corridor, and companies continue to invest in the area with both expansions and relocations

Hays County, with San Marcos as its seat, saw its population grow faster than any other county in Texas from 2010 to 2020, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data. Comal County, with New Braunfels as its seat, was not far behind. New Braunfels was even pegged as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country over the last 10 years among those that had more than 50,000 residents at the beginning of the decade.

And Hays County was the only county in the nation with at least 100,000 residents that grew by more than 50% over the last decade.
