That is interesting to know. My significant other has a large amount of student debt and that could affect my investing after we tie the knot.

I would recommend reading "The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Real Estate Investing" published by BiggerPockets and available for free. Building a strong foundation of knowledge from books, blogs, forums, and podcasts will help you decide and create a solid plan.

@Dave FosterThanks for the advice. The situation is a bit tricky as the land is two lots in two trusts and I own half of each. Both of the Grantor's have passed away (at different times) so I would imagine at least one lot will have a large capital gain. I will have to talk with an attorney and accountant but that will have to wait until I am out of school as I do not have funds to pursue it currently.

I entered Wisconsin as my location but that is not technically true yet. I am a Mechanical Engineering student at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. I am graduating this May and have accepted a position in Green Bay, WI.

I plan to start investing in real estate after I begin working. I plan to start with buy and hold investments as my position will involve large amounts of travel with short notice. I would like to start investing in some multi-family properties. I feel this will be the best way for me to begin building wealth after graduation.

I currently have one investment property that I inherited in SE Michigan. It is some undeveloped tillable land that I rent to a farmer. After I relocate to Green Bay I plan to sell the property (using a 1031 Exchange) to finance my first multi-family investment.
