Post: Choosing a RE brokerage as an investor

For those with a RE license, what was your main criteria on choosing a brokerage to hang your license with? Did you find it difficult to find one that was ok with your marketing and investment plans? Also, what is a good commission split starting out as an investor with a RE license? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for creating this powerful learning tool, Happy Birthday from So Cal!

@Joshua Dorkin & Brandon, congratulations on an amazing feat gents. With the amount of info crammed in these podcasts I'm sure that number will continue to increase at a rapid pace. Cheers to BP nation!

Thank you for coordinating this @Ali Boone I'll be out of town in January, but I'm all in for an early February meet up. Would be a pleasure to meet all my fellow BP Southern Californians.

@Chanté Owens I like this topic. This is really what it's all about. Figuring out the WHY and then making the sacrifices to achieve the goals. I don't have family in RE nor did I receive a huge sum from family to get started. Being in So Cal investing locally is definitely a challenge especially when you're just starting. Since I've been on BP I immediately started coming up with goals, and I knew sacrifices would have to be made. For me one i'll throw out there is eating out. I work in different areas every day so with all these delicious food joints on every corner its tempting and expensive! Mmm In-in-out burger...haha. Any of the daily little things are what add up, It gets real when you start looking how much you spend over a long period of time, you're talking thousands that can potentially be a percentage of a down payment (in some parts of the country, the down payment itself!). One more is huge payment luxury vehicles as I'm sure quite a few investors would agree, unless I buy a big rig and put it to work, taxi cab or any money making vehicle its just not smart! That money saved every month can be better off used for investing. Oh I also cut down on going to Vegas two or three times a year! Hey I'm not perfect I'm working on it hehe.

@Mark Ferguson it's 135 hours here in Cali. 45hrs each principles, practice and one elective. I chose finance, there are a few others you can choose including legal aspects of RE.

@Mark Ferguson I'm working on my California license at the moment while working a full time job. I'm doing it all online and I can agree it is definitely a challenge. After work just to stay awake I know I need energy drinks on deck if I know i'll be studying for a few hours! I know for me personally I'd prefer a classroom setting but my working hours cancel out that possibility.

I've read quite a bit on the subject of acquiring the license, and it looks like you would agree that the positives really outweigh the negatives. I think the only thing I've read as far as negatives is disclosures/liability. But I guess if you're doing what you're supposed to be doing you have nothing to worry about right? The fact that you can branch off into different areas of investing is what's exciting! Thanks for sharing it was a good read, really made me feel I made the right choice by going after it.
