Let this also be a lesson to those who "wish" they had a high-paying job! I, like several others here, have a excellent 6-figure income. What I (we) don't have is FREEDOM, which can't be bought, when it's part of your psyche. If you're on BP, you're likely an entrepreneur at heart and that W2 income only works as long as you still have control of the majority of your life...unfortunately, that big income usually means you are "owned" by your employer. Like others, I am working toward leaving my full-time job! Congrats on quitting!!!!
Contact the police on how to proceed. The bank can not cover up fraudulent check writing.

Jim Wilcox I think we all believe they have left, but you should heed the advice to talk to an attorney before you do anything other than your posted maintenance inspection. Stuff you hear at an REI meeting is NOT legal advice & could get you in trouble. A few hundred in attorney fees now could save you thousands later. Good luck!

You ask for it.  As the buyer, you have the legal right to do so....and to walk away if the info is not provided, bad, or has other red flags.

Oh, and you won't find any multi-families inside that box, intentionally. It's zoned to stay SFR to preserve the district....but multi-families are all around, and with the junior college expanding and the city offering incentives along those lines, it's an excellent time to get in on that, if you can afford new development.

(anyone doing new development in Everett, near the colleg, PM me!  I want in!!!)  :D

@Chris Newman

Lol, no worries...fwiw, I loved the graphics (especially the new layover).  I guess I just felt the need to clarify because I feel like Everett doesn't really get the credit it deserves sometimes, and is still suffering from a "blue collar" reputation that it certainly did deserve in the past.

For me, the "defense" of the city actually happened soon after I moved to our current neighborhood (I should clarify...I physically reside in Oregon for work, at the moment, and we're renting out the house on Grand, but I intend to retire in it - unless something better comes along).  I was working even further north, in Mt. Vernon, and when I would tell people that I lived in Everett, almost every single person would scrunch up their nose and forehead and say something along the lines of "Ewww" or "WHY??!?".  It was completely baffling to me, given how lovely my neighborhood and downtown are, until hubby and I started exploring further south along RT99....all the sudden the light bulb went off.

There are DEFINITELY sketchy areas, but those might be the BEST areas to invest in right now, because in 10 years...................

(just to bring it back to the topic at hand ;) )

With all due respect @Chris Newman

"The Everett historic district runs from around 8th Street to 25th Street, north to south and from Broadway to Grand Avenue, east to west. The district contains many old stately homes including the home of the former U.S. Senator Henry M. Jackson on Grand Avenue."

My house is ON Grand Ave, in the historic district, between 8th and 25th St. I'm am restricted by "historic district" rules.  My house IS one of the bluff homes.  I KNOW where historic North Everett is (I think we may be disagreeing on semantics at this point.  If so, I defer.)  My home has been owned by 4 doctors and a lawyer, since being built in 1924.  Fairly ironic, lol.  The neighborhood is called, by the neighborhood association I'm in, and flanking the northern end toward the golf course, the Northwest Neighborhood and Historic North Everett.  I don't know what else to tell ya.

You're little arrow needs to be ABOVE Rt2.  :)

Old houses and "historic" houses are NOT one and the same.  Other than that, your assessment is dead on.  I agree, Seattle is booming and it's just a matter of time before the spillover comes just a little further North.  The City of Everett is doing a great job of anticipating this growth and is trying to build / zone in anticipation.  They are trying to keep downtown Everett and surrounding neighborhoods walkable.  It is my earnest hope that any investors in this area will buy with this in mind and help keep their homes up, and tenants excellent.  We ALL benefit from a higher grade tenant. :)

As for Robert, he's probably in the process of his cross-country move....perhaps he'll be pleasantly surprised to see such a response when he gets to the Left Coast!

@Chris Newman

:) I wasn't minimizing the possible contamination (okay, I was...) because the truth is that it's fairly irrelevant for people doing day to day things.  Just like with people who live in old homes with asbestos and lead paint, it's only a "danger" if you go mucking around with it...and even then, it's very dose dependent.  There are THOUSANDS of cities across the nation with sites like this.  It's almost unavoidable.  Besides, we're probably getting more radiation from the recent solar flares and Fukushima than issues from a plant that closed 100 years ago.

I would agree with your assessment of the "hot" areas to the south, although I would caution you not to discount North Everett so easily.  I don't think you know the neighborhoods as well as you may think and, while you're absolutely correct that there are "sketchy" areas, they are quickly improving now that the Port of Everett Revitalization project is well underway, and all the blue collar workers have moved on since the Kimberly Clark plant shut down.  Small row, shotgun, cottage, and craftsman houses that formerly had views of a 10-story brick factory wall, now have "million dollar views" of the Naval Station (and the carrier home-ported there), the Everett Marina, and the Puget Sound.  A smart investor might consider buying up some of these little houses, and make a killing on a rental...

Homes in Historic North Everett (my neighborhood) are quite safe, walkable, have easy access to major employers, shopping, and I-5.....and are often in the $500K - $1M+price range (in the gentrified portions...remember the lesson about buying CLOSE to the nicest neighborhood you can?).  Hardly a "bad neighborhood".  Those "bad" neighborhoods are cloistered around the Everett Mall, to the South.  Historic North Everett (the area above the Base) hosts marathons, multiple festivals, garden shows, art festivals, Farmer's markets, etc at the parks at either end of Grand Ave.

I'm hoping I can pick up several more houses in North Everett.  It is already a lovely place to live and recent improvements mean that it's going to become cost-prohibitive to buy-&-hold there much longer.  Get in while you can.  :D
