It’s a small Co-Op, 15 shareholders in total, and is well managed with plenty of reserves on hand, etc. looking for anyone who might be truly knowledgeable in this area, and would be willing to let me bounce some things off of them, to see if it makes sense.

While STRs can be more volatile, a well-chosen property in a strong location, especially near a college town or high-demand area (like the beach or mountains) can offer both cash flow and tax advantages while you gain hands-on experience managing a property.Good luck if you do decide to invest, there still are plenty of opportunities out there if you strategize and figure out what works best for your situation.

Regardless of your level of plain/simple vs rustic vs fancy, you can do it for much less by just going to used furnishing stores (primarily).I used both 1) high-end second hand stores (meaning not primarily Goodwill and Salvation Army), and 2) lower level antiques stores where they have decent pieces for say < $500.
