Today you have to spend your time and money where it counts not where parents are societal pressures tell you to and you'll come out fistfuls ahead of the rest.

Your argument of no jobs and low pay doesn't seem to be founded in anything other than your perception from an occasional visit and maybe what your friends/family are telling you...please let me know if I'm mistaken.I'm curious what is so compelling about Columbus or Indy that makes you think that these cities are poised to appreciate significantly faster than Louisville and would make for better buy and hold purchases?

On average, and this is just my perception as a Spanish national having worked all over Europe, Spaniards' command of English is poor.It is true younger generations are much more capable, but we are still well behind when compared to the Nordics, Netherlands, etc.

As a frequent renter of vacation rentals, my perception is that VRBO offers a more polished experience for the renter.

I was able to purchase 2 properties this year in those areas and see a lot of value there.As well as being a real estate investor, I am A licensed mortgage associate that specializes in assisting real estate investors with financing so I like to think that I have a unique perception of the real estate investing industry, especially in the Atlantic provinces as that is where I choose to invest myself. 

If you only sell a house once every 10 years, then why care about how you behave towards others or their perception of you.

Again, talking about it would quash these false beliefs and help improve perceptions.

The value of what you paid is based on your perception.
