Be VERY transparent and show them-- it's their choice to prioritize you over say a cell phone bill. 

OP if you need some of the DR medicine (or the AA medicine, or the cancer treatment, or the cough syrup) is kind of up to you and your personal needs, not up to anyone else.

Lets say that same tenant who is a single mother who has terminal cancer and is a minority that is getting evicted due to nonpayment but it comes out the university is behind it, that's someone's pr nightmare at the university.
