Post: I Finally Did It: I'm Retiring from My Corporate J.O.B.

I'm Retiring from Corporate!

Next month, on January 18th, I will be retiring from my corporate job as an Internal Auditor to be a full-time real estate investor. I am super excited. I've been working toward this for the last 15+ years, since I was in college and purchased my first duplex. I posted a little more info on how I did it on my Bigger Pockets blog HERE.

My Background

I'm not quitting cold turkey with nothing to fall back on. I did things the slow way. I've been working to supplement my W-2 job income with real estate income and it has finally gotten to the point where I can step out on my own and not have my family of 5 starve (wife and 3 kids). I spent the first 12 years out of college working full-time in various accounting and auditing roles. Three years ago I transitioned to working part-time at my corporate job have been building up my rental portfolio income at a faster pace to where I finally have enough income to make the leap to full-time real estate investor.

What I'm Going to Be Doing

Starting next year I will be ramping up the number of flips and remodels. I will also manage the current rental houses, commercial properties and self storage units we have. My plan is to focus on core things we do well, and do lots more of them next year.

Thanks to Bigger Pockets

I'd like to thank Bigger Pockets for being part of my success. I've read so many articles, blogs, podcasts and forums over the last many years. I believe this is one of the most informative real estate websites out there today. I always recommend newbies join here and learn everything they can learn for free as opposed to signing up for expensive gurus. I've listened to more podcasts than I can count and even had the chance to appear on Podcast Episode 138. I think I probably have learned more from the podcasts than anything else.

Let's Wrap Things Up

I'm a little nervous, but also very excited about this next step. For those that are just starting out, I'll say this. You can do it, too. It took me a long time. I was conservative, slow, and steady, but I finally got there. You can probably get there faster than me if you learn from Bigger Pockets and don't make all the same mistakes I did.

Happy Investing!

Way to go @Scott Trench and @Joshua Dorkin.  I was scanning CNBC at lunch and just saw your article.  Great press!

id recommend you get cloud based software that includes a website so you can track your activity and allow tenants to rent online.  I use Easy Storage Solutions.

Then I'd recommend you work on seo and Google pay per click to drive prospects to your website. There needs to be a phone number with someone to answer the inquiries as well.

Good luck

Above is a link to a YouTube video put on by Rand Fishkin of Moz.  He does a weekly video series called whiteboard Friday that is the best series I've seen on seo. I highly recommend watching these videos if you are trying to get your website ranked.

Thanks @Scott Trench.  I think Mindy also did something on the backend to fix the glitch and attach the company to my profile.  Thanks so much for everyone's help fixing this.... on Christmas Eve.  :)  That's great customer service!!

Merry Christmas!

Thanks @Scott Trench

I think may be some sort of glitch on my account. Trexie was able to add my company back and fix the glitch earlier this morning. However, the link to where I should be able to attach my company to my profile doesn't work or I'm just doing something wrong. I don't see what everyone else sees. See attachment for what I am seeing.

Thanks for your help!

Michael

@Scott Trench

I'm a Pro member and my business logo disappeared from my signature?  I'm not sure why this happened.  I tried to link back to my business (Chandler Properties) and it is saying the page is longer available.  I then tried to recreate my business page and it said Chandler Properties already exists.

Any ideas?  I'd like to add my business and logo back to my signature.

Welcome @Heather Moreland to Bigger Pockets.  I recommend listening to the podcasts and staying active on the forums.  You can learn a ton of information here with little cost.

Also, congratulations on nearing graduation with the accounting degree.  As a CPA and graduate of University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, I am always glad to see new Chattanooga accountants on Bigger Pockets.

@Justin Traille

I am looking for properties in Chattanooga, TN area.  Including Cleveland TN, Ooltewah, Apison, Hixson, East Brainerd, etc. If you have properties with the following characteristics, please reach to me and I'd love to work with you.

- SFH's that I can purchase at 70 to 75% of ARV (After Repair Value).

- ARV's on most of my properties are between $100k to $250k.

- I am looking for good wholesalers with real deals, as opposed to the "wholesalers" that are marketing MLS listings, low income properties in rough parts of town, or properties that are ~90% of ARV.

Thanks!

Michael
