Just FYI (Employment opportunities): Most tech companies in the area are still in RTP (closer to Morrisville, Cary, Durham). Redhat and Citrix have moved to downtown Raleigh. But the IBM, Cisco, Netapp, EMC, Lenovo, Oracle, DB (Technology Center) and Metlife (Technology Center) are all in RTP/(Durham, Morrisville, Cary).

Durham has also the Google For Entrepreneurs Tech Hub, which is now host to many very interesting startups.

Check it out here: http://americanunderground.com/

Good luck.

Why did you zero-in on Raleigh only? Is the whole area of the triangle an option for you? I think you could find lot more duplexes or even 4-plexes in Durham.

If you look on realtor.com, you might be able to find what you looking for. Many of these would be a little older properties though.

Good luck in your search.

Fantastic work there @Philip Williams. Definitely inspiring.

I'm also looking to graduate to multi family/Apartment buildings. I have done SFR for a while now. The few deals I have found, which I could qualify for are not in the "best neighborhoods".

What words of wisdom could you pass along to help those who might invest in economically challenged areas?

Thank you all for the different perspectives.

@Michael R.. I definitely agree with both the points your make about self preservation and "Nice seeming employers".

Another thing I'm curious about is, if you run a side business and have a website or even contribute heavily here on biggerpockets. If your boss was to run a google search, it would be quite easy for them to find you and some will be able to understand that what we do requires quite a lot of time and resources. Has anyone ever been asked out of the blue by their manager who found out about their side business? How did the conversation go?

I have a 9-6 job and recently, my company went from cubicles to open space office set-ups. I seat pretty much next to my boss now. As I grow my business more and more, I have found myself getting calls from brokers, insurance, agents, bankers, ... etc in the middle of the day during meetings and such (on my cellphone, nothing on my business phone).

A few months ago, I had mentioned it to my co-workers that I do have a volume of real estate investments and was looking to add more. The information might have trickled up to my boss and in the last couple of 1x1 sessions with my boss, he tried to ask me all the other "interesting things" I do outside of work. Although my boss seems like a "nice and reasonable" person, I don't want him to know any of my personal business.

Does your manager @ work know you are an investor? Have you had that conversation with them? Just curious how various folks have handled this situation. If you were a manager at your job, how would you handle this situation?
