I'm also going to build covered entryways so as guests, workers and visitors should be safe when entering my upcoming project... A 12k s.f. school that I'm converting into my primary residence and company workshop and offices... The side and rear entrances are not protected and it would be very dangerous if large icicles dropped from the roof, 3 stories up... and the floors are over 15' tall each.

I plan to replace that ugly covered main entrance with 4 10' columns and a V roof using reclaimed slate tiles to match the buildings slate roof...

A good idea and a beautiful building.  Hope you share photos after the conversion.

Hi Kevin.

I guess you'd need to know what area of REI you want to be in.

2- 3 hrs from Forest Hills, barring traffic will find you all over. From Jamaica and Nassau County to the Poconos, Jersey City, Middletown NY, Danbury, NewHaven and points South of Hartford, CT.

But don't give up on Queens. There are some meetups with folks on BP from that area. Type Queens in the search bar and ID some fellow residents. You might find a mentor among them. And they might know of a REIA that you don't know about.

Then draw a map, do some research online about the areas you're interested in, then get out there.  Make a date with some of the local realtors to get a local viewpoint into a community.  Spend some time.

Is there a place where you already spend time, that you already know? If so, maybe branch out from there.

I hope this helps.

Any areas you'd suggest that's within 2-3 hrs when starting with under 50k?

Excellent.  Congratulations on this one.

There's some debate going on, even on BP, about buying in one's own name or thru LLC or S-Corp. You seem to be active, not passive investor, so are you buying and holding in LLC?

There are good REIAs. Look at a REIA much like buying a new vehicle...take it for a test drive before you make a decision.

I like the test drive analogy, Thomas.  And I understand about the CT mentality.  My search may take me to some of the surrounding suburbs I think.  NYC can be daunting even to natives.

@Karen O. Welcome to the community, of BiggerPockets! The people here have a vast amount of knowledge and are more than willing to share their experience and provide sound insight and advice. Be sure to check out the forums, the blogs, podcasts as well as other parts of this amazing website and like minded community. I am located, in Miami. I am a Rehabber as well as a Buy and Hold Investor. I located my local REIAs, by doing an Internet Search. People can recommend a REIA, but you really will not know if a certain REIA is a good fit, for you, until you attend a meeting, to get a vibe for how dedicated a REIA is to REI as well as both the quality and knowledge level, of the attendees. Many REIAs pitch products, so please beware. Please free to reach out, to me, if you feel I may be of assistance, to your Real Estate Endeavors. Much to your success!

Thank you for the thoughts Thomas.  I really appreciate the insight.

Hi. New to REI. Not new to RE ownership. I live in NYC and own within 2- 3hrs. I want to do flips. NYC is a tough area if you don't have a lot of cash.

While I've enjoyed reading posts at BP, most folks seem to be in places where there's lots of SFRs.  We're heavy on the pricey condos and Co-ops here.

Anybody on BP operating in NYC area that can recommend good REIAs to join?

Thanks
