Quote from @Jack Faysash:

Here’s a screenshot of the capital gains rates. If you can arrange your income to be under $41,675 you won’t have to pay anything. Otherwise, 15% on $4k isn’t the worst, part of the game of investing in the stock market. Good luck on your real estate investing.

 Thank you @Jack Faysash for the information! I agree too, 15% on $4K isn't too bad and these things are totally part of the game of investing in the stock market. Thanks again!

There is none unless you move those gains into Opportunity Zone. There will be some tax breaks. Might not be practical for small amount and a new investor.

 Thanks for your reply @Ashish Acharya! Totally agree with you, I dont think an opportunity zone would be the most practical option for me now, especially that it is not a significant amount of money but I will definitely consider it in the future. Thanks again!

Quote from @Justin Winn:

I’m also under the impression it has to be like for like, meaning real estate into real estate, no cross asset class contamination.

One other thing to consider is how long you’ve held those investments. Anything purchased within the past 12 months, gains realized will be taxed at your annual income rate what ever that is for you. Anything over 12 months will be 15% as capital gains.

I am not a CPA, or tax professional, so please consult with a professional to ensure nothing I’ve said is outdated or inaccurate.

Best of luck as you move into RE.

Thanks for the rely @Justin Winn! The information is very useful. Yeah I was sure it had to be like-for-like but I thought it would be a good idea to double check :) Thanks again!

@Nathan Murith

Thanks for your reply! To be honest I didn't expect a tax break like this to exist but thought it might be worth it to ask.

Thanks again, Nathan!

Hi everyone,

In order to start my real estate investing career and diversify my income streams from other than just my 9-5 and the stock market, I am planning on closing one of the personal investment accounts that I have and using that money as part of a down payment (I am still saving up) on an investment property. It is not a lot of money in the account and in the duration in which it has been open, it grew about $4k in gains which isn't much but it is still taxable gains nonetheless. I wanted to ask whether there are any tax breaks for gains made in the stock market that will be transferred to purchase a real estate property/investment? I'm thinking of maybe something similar to a 1031 exchange but instead of the capital gains coming from a property that I sold, it is coming from gains in the stock market? I apologize if this may seem like a silly question. I am still a newbie to REI and I am not familiar with the tax laws around it.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to interacting more with everyone in the BP community!

@Victoria R Moos

Hi Victoria! I am also located in Silicon Valley and I am completely new to real estate investing (REI). As you have seen through the replies on your post, a great way to learn about REI is by connecting/networking with other local investors. The same advice has been given to me too on multiple occasions. There are local meetups that happen here in the area that you can find either by looking on the various social media platforms. A very popular one to find local meetups is on meetup.com. I went to my first one just yesterday and it was great! Search for "The Barstool Investor Bay Area" on meetup.com to find out when the next event is. Hope to see you there soon!

The education is definitely the first step.  Podcasts, books, and local real estate events are a great way to do it.

Once you learn the basics it will help guide you on which path you want to take in real estate.

Thank you Brock! This is very helpful. Real estate events? How does one find such events?

Hi @Anthony Taylor. I posted a similar question on the forums the other day. One option to find local real estate events in on the BP forums. Go to the forum and in the category search, type in "Real Estate Events and Happenings" and change the location filter to the area you are located in. Another option would be to go on meetup.com and look for real estate events in your area. meetup.com seems to be the most popular way people find events! Good luck!

@Nathan Murith

Hi Nathan. Thanks so much for your reply! That's really good to know. I will have to start checking meetup.com and going to the local events. I hope we will get to connect at one someday! I would really appreciate it if you keep me in the loop for any interesting ones!

Thanks again!

Hello BP Family,

I am extremely new in the field of RE investing and one of the recurring pieces of advice I get on my posts/from the BP podcast is that people just starting out should go to local REI networking events and meet other investors with similar interests that they can learn a lot from. I am in the San Jose/Bay Area and so I have been checking the "Real Estate Events and Happenings" tab on the BP forum and it seems like there is no activity happening there. I wanted to ask that ,other than through the BP forums, what are some ways you hear about REI events in your area and are there any recommendations you would have for someone when they go to their first networking event knowing that they are a complete newbie?

Thank you!
