@Pavan Sandhu I would say that was the only reason I got delayed. My architectural design was set from the beginning but city had a lot of comments about structural. Its a detached ADU

@Shawna Hunter took me about 7 months to get the permit. My structural Engineering co wasn't that good so it took me long. Orelse it might have probably taken about 3 months I'd guess..

Jackylyn, I am sorry to hear this, here are some suggestions.

- there is some wording in the ADU CA law that you cannot be forced to make changes to the existing house if you are building the ADU as this would impact ADU development and CA wants to promote ADU development not deter it. If I find the exact wording, I will come back & post it here, please do some research at the below site, I am pretty sure I had read it here

http://www.hcd.ca.gov/policy-research/AccessoryDwellingUnits.shtml

- We are also currently building an ADU, we have a shed which is 3 feet from the existing house (the code is 6 feet), we also have a lot of extra concrete on the front yard, but the planning division gave us waivers as it wasn't done by us & was done by previous owner. Try to talk to the city officials and get an exception

Hi Vivan,

If you plan to stay here long term - say 7-10 years, I would advise against investing in India. Mainly because of the currency impact. Indian is high inflation economy, which means the rupee will depreciate against the dollar long term

10 years back 55 rupees could buy 1 USD & now it takes 70+ rupees to buy 1 USD. If you had invested in India 10 years back, your investment would have already depreciated just due to currency impact

As for where to invest around Bay Area you've gotten some good advise.

Great option for someone wanting to live this lifestyle while they are getting established or gives one freedom to quit their jobs and take risks without being financially burdened. From Tiny houses to micro living to podsharing. Its great to to see how housing options have evolved.

Hi Eric, I am working with Open Remodel based in Santa Clara/Cupertino, they have been fast and amazing! Ask for Shweta, we have had quite a few issues and like her approach to problem solving, they are also reasonably priced.

Other than spouse and parents - its a good idea to charge everyone else (even if its a discounted price). Relationships stay cleaner and longer.
