I would use the low rent rates of that area to take advantage of the fact that you can probably make money on your BAH? If you live “below your means” by renting a place below your housing allowance, you come out ahead. It’s not likely that you will want to keep a rental in Leesville as an out of state owner when you get your next duty station somewhere far away. 

I would use time at Ft. Polk as a learning and saving opportunity. Keep studying and learning all you can about investing, because you are likely to get PCSed out of there within 3-4 years. That is not enough time to recoup the transaction costs if you buy something that you end up selling in less than 5 years.
