Fear is one of our most basic instincts; you can read about it in pretty much any sales psychology book. Most people will choose to not risk loosing $100 over winning $100. The feeling of safety is worth more to our instincts than the opportunity.

Individuals who make decisions more based on how they feel than on their congitive understanding are more volnerable to the fear approach.

In politics populists do the same. Fear of job losses, fear of higher taxes, fear of a virus, fear of having something taken away from you like a gun (double fear, because first they take something from you and now you are left without protection) are powerful manipulators.

Cognitive processing takes a lot of calories. The world has become a very complex place, our issues are extremly complex. Complex issues require complex solutions, but people prefer simple solutions, something that takes only one sentence to explain, something they can chant.

Fear blocks rational thinking and prompts an subconcious response, which is much faster and much more powerful than a cognitive decision. It can trigger your flight or fight response, which has to be fast. You can't sit down and contemplate your options before making a rational decision when you face an angry bear...

Basically, whenever someone is apealing to a fear you have, you are being manipulated. Once you realize that, you see it everywhere.

Everytime I write copy my marketing consultant always says “remember make it fear based.” -One Sentence

Post: Is legacy just vanity?

I hear people talk about leaving a legacy a lot. They want to make generational wealth and create their “legacy”. I have had a hard time understanding this. I am sure this is going to be an unpopular statement but isn’t legacy just vanity? How you want to be remembered by future generations seems incredibly vain to me. I think the things I am most proud of in life are the things I struggled to attain. Isn’t a little bit of struggling healthy?

I want my children to have every opportunity in life, but I don’t see how generational wealth benefits them. It certainly may make it easier for them, but I want them to embrace the struggle and overcome those obstacles that life throws at us. No matter what we do life is going to throw obstacles in their way. It is my intention to teach my kids, through both speech and example, that setting goals, using your brain, and fighting through those bumps in the road will not only help them achieve but they will feel good about it too.

When I hear people talk about generational wealth and legacy, I think of a sales pitch by the speaker who is tapping into the vanity of the audience. If the audience sees themselves as not being able to provide such a legacy for their children, they may dream of it. But why? Shouldn't they be building the “legacy” every day by teaching them how to achieve and strive. How to overcome. How to challenge themselves. How to look in the mirror in the morning and be both proud and motivated. That seems like a much stronger “legacy” to leave than anything financial.

@Tim Bellnier I know some people in California with rentals who are a killing though. They don’t seem too upset.

@Ryan D. I use professional management. I have many rentals in low income areas and I understand and am prepared for the hardships and challenges that come with that. Not being able to evict people I was not anticipating though. We’re working through it and will come out the other side but it makes you reevaluate

I’ll be surprised if we dodge that bullet.
