Great question and great responses. There is a plethora of wisdom in this thread. Especially with family I think tact is essential. Don't push them away and create divides, but don't let them muffle your enthusiasm.

Increasingly I've noticed a trend towards renting your own residence while owning income properties. There are various arguments for both sides. What do you do and why? I currently own with the intent of holding it as a rental when I move in a few years.
