Since I had started investing2 at age 48 and had already been successful (20 year career USAF Fighter Pilot), I had more than enough reserves to start investing in real estate.  

As far as the fire department goes, i would at least take the time to look up that information before making a decision because most professional fire fighters at need at least a high school diploma.

I am just a old retired fighter pilot jock who spent 20 years in the playground before I had to grow up and became a financial advisor for 20 years (18 of which I became independent; sold my firm 6 years ago).  

And cost would be nominal, leaving plenty to keep doing "aircraft carrier groups and the next sexy line of fighter jet's" because it's the sale of the MBS that "fund's" it all and cost is limited to creation of the agency of oversight, which as others have done can later be privatized.

Undoubtably in my mind, the goon't will have to make some tough decision, unpopular ones such as bailing out the airlines and other leisure conglomerates such as Hilton Global - reminiscence of the '08/'09 bailout of Wall Street, though different to some extent as the airline / hotel type of "blue chip" stocks are majority owned by Fidelity and Blackrocks of the world, which in turn is own by major pension funds, and guess who's the largest holders or contributors of pensions funds, your everyday teachers, fire fighters, police officers and etc., so I would imagine the govern't won't have much of choice...
