It's a bad law attempting to remedy a bad problem where the federal government has totally lacked any pratical or effective policy since the last attempt at immigraton reform in 1986.
The federal government won't REALLY get serious about immigration reform because the dirty little secret is big business wants and needs illegal immigrants for maximum profitablity and they reall have more to do with dictating government policy than the ameican people do.
If the federal government REALLY wants to curb illegal immigration they will start getting serious about border security. That includes a beefed up miltiary presence along the border a bigger budget for the U.S Border Patrol and executives of major corporations doing the "Perp walk" for systematically hiring illegal immigrants particularly in the construction and the agriculture industries.

Even a second grader will tell you that s/he would rather get $1.00 from 1,000 people than $1,000 from 1 person. If you lose one person in both scenario's, you still get $999 in the first one but you get zero in the other one. Put another way, would you rather have one rental that rents for $5,000 a month or 10 rentals that each rent for $500 each?
If we opened up more offshore drilling, how many jobs would that create? THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS. Plus, we could tell the Middle Easterners to drink their oil for all we care.
We've been down that rode with the Reagan Administration and the with Bush 43. The major beneficiaries of lower corporate and income taxes for the rich are the rich. The growing disparity between the wage growth between upper income Americans and others is a testatment to this. The Republican version of "Trickle Down" economics don't trickle down.
As for the belief that opening up oil exploration along the costlines will free the United States from foreign oil dependency I challenge you to show me study the affirms this. The reality is most studies show only modest increases in domestic production will be gained by offshore drilling.
The reality is the addication to carbon based fuels is unsustainable long term. We need to move toward using renewable cleaner sources of energy. It's in our economic and national security best interest.

I'm not saying I agree with the article (I haven't seen the raw data), but thought it was interesting enough to share...
Also, as the article points out, the causation is not clear. In other words, religious people and Conservatives may not be less intelligent because they are religious and/or Conservative, but instead it could be that they are religious and/or Conservative because they are less intelligent.
Again, not my conclusion...just the conclusion of these professors...
Ouch!

And when it comes to skilled labor, there are other countries that are producing more of it than the U.S. is...as long as our educational system continues to decline, so will our economy and so will this country...
It's not just about skilled labor it's the COST of that skilled labor. The United States cannot compete against the labor cost in China, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. In the past the cost issue mostly affected low skilled jobs and manufacturing jobs but now it includes high skilled jobs. I heard recently that China pays workers about $.89 an hour to produce solar panels. The same labor in the United States cost $27.00. There are some areas of manufacturing and research and development where many corporations have come the conclusion that it simply isn't cost effective anymore manufacture in the United States.
The key is to focus on areas where it is cost effective to manufacture here and then providing the educational resources to train people for these jobs.

As in many things in life the devil of this case is going to be in the details. The issue here is if Goldman Sachs misrepresented their role in creating mortgage backed securities, collateralized debt obligations and other derivatives. If the SEC has enough proof then Godman Sachs is in fact guilty. However they will have the best legal representation that money can buy. I'm really interested in seeing this case come to trial and what kind of evidence the SEC has against Goldman.

Look at how long this has been an issue. The real reason that illegal immigration exists is that there are powerful corporate and political interest that benefit. Everybody complains about illegal immigration but are Americans ready to pay the price in terms of higher cost for goods and services that low cost illegal immigrant labor help keep down? Are people prepared to pay higher taxes for a more secure border or more aggressive immigration enforcement?
I for one agree that we need to do a better job of securing our borders and enforcing the existing immigration laws more aggressively.
On another note George W. Bush Jr. had 8 YEARS to put new immigration policy in place and failed to make any signficant changes. To title this thread "What Part of Illegal Do Liberals Not Understand" fails to acknowledge this fact and the fact that the biggest employers of illegal aliens are often businesses and corporations with CONSERVATIVE political mindsets.

In order to have a double dip there had to have been some sort of rise. We haven't had a rise just a period when there were fewer foreclosures. What we had was just a slower rate of decline. This issue really wont' begin to work its way out until the employment and wage picture improves.
