What would your estimate be for 1000 sf, painted? @Kurt F.
Too long to mess with.
I agree with the installation of overlay thickness gyp bd., as suggested by others.

I think one person can do 1000 sf a day.

That's presuming it's unpainted. A popcorn ceiling with several coats of paint requires considerably more effort.
I like what's been said so far... buy some basics, then purchase more per job as needed. Do you have any building / construction / handyman experience?
No worries. You would not be the first to start a band, THEN learn how to play the instruments.

Too many factors to promote a one-size fits all solution.

"A fair mark up is 20-50% not 100%..." @Royce Talbo
Again, as many here have repeatedly pointed out, "mark up" is not the issue. You've misunderstood.

I think you missed Steve H's intended humor.

How much rent could you get for a separate attic apartment? And how much would that project cost you? (Also, would you need an exterior stair built as well -- for a private entry to the separate attic apartment?)

Why are some posters still stating that the contractor "marked up" the item from 380 to 700? The OP said part and install, which means the price includes the part and the necessary labor plus all of the additional costs that @Aaron McGinnismentioned straightaway.
Yes, as suggested, get multiple quotes, especially when you are outside your area of expertise. And, yes, get them itemized for apples to apples comparison.
But as for essentially using the guy, as Ross did -- hopefully inadvertently -- we all need to be respectful of other's time. It's like having the local shoe store clerks take time to fit you, then you go online and order the new shoes at a discount -- plus, you then post online that the shoe store is untrustworthy. I doubt Ross would enjoy this treatment were the tables turned.

You were a high school teacher? This must seem like a cakewalk.
Congratulations!
